Asia Cup 2025: Maheesh Theekshana’s Stunning Caught-and-Bowled Sends Shubman Gill Packing
The Asia Cup Super Fours clash between India and Sri Lanka in Dubai produced an early moment of brilliance that had fans and players stunned. Sri Lankan spinner Maheesh Theekshana pulled off a spectacular caught-and-bowled to dismiss India’s opener Shubman Gill, setting the tone for an intense contest.
Gill, known for his elegant drives and inventive stroke play, looked confident as he walked to the crease. Facing just his third delivery, he leaned into a drive off a fullish ball from Theekshana. The connection was clean, but the shot went straight back towards the bowler. In a flash, Theekshana dived across and plucked the ball with both hands, leaving Gill rooted in disbelief before making the long walk back after scoring only four runs.
The dismissal showcased razor-sharp reflexes and athleticism, earning Theekshana loud cheers from teammates and the Dubai crowd alike.
At the toss earlier, Sri Lanka skipper Charith Asalanka chose to bowl first despite his side already being eliminated from the final race. “We know we can’t qualify, but it is still an important game for us. The pitch looks good, and we want to restrict them to 170-175,” Asalanka said, confirming one change with Janith Liyanage replacing Chamika Karunaratne.
India, having already secured their spot in the Asia Cup final against Pakistan, made two changes of their own. Captain Suryakumar Yadav explained, “We were actually looking to bat first. Good atmosphere, good game, and we are looking forward to it. It’s part of the game (dropped catches). Bumrah and Dube are out, Arshdeep and Harshit come in.”
India’s campaign so far has been powered by Abhishek Sharma’s form at the top and Kuldeep Yadav’s brilliance with the ball. However, 12 dropped catches in the tournament remain a concern heading into the final.
For Sri Lanka, who had been unbeaten in the group stage but fell short in the Super Fours, moments like Theekshana’s stunner provide something to cheer about as they look to finish on a positive note.
