Asia Cup 2025: India Survive Super Over Thriller Against Sri Lanka
DUBAI: What seemed like a dead-rubber clash at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium on Friday turned into a high-drama spectacle as India and Sri Lanka played out a tie, sending the contest into a Super Over.
Sri Lanka’s Pathum Nissanka was the star with a sublime 107 off 58 balls, raising hopes of a consolation win in the Super Four stage. His 127-run partnership with Kusal Perera gave Sri Lanka a strong platform after they chased 203. However, India’s bowlers held their nerve in the closing stages, keeping the match alive.
With three runs needed off the final ball, Dasun Shanaka hit towards long-on but could only scramble for two, forcing a Super Over. In the tie-breaker, Arshdeep Singh conceded just two runs and took both wickets, while India captain Suryakumar Yadav needed a single ball to chase down the target, keeping India’s unbeaten run intact.
During India’s innings, the batting display was led by Abhishek Sharma, Tilak Varma, and Sanju Samson. Sharma scored a rapid 61 off 31 balls, while Tilak (49*, 34b) and Samson (39, 23b) guided India to an imposing total of 202/5. Their 66-run partnership in the middle overs ensured India maintained momentum, giving the team confidence heading into the final.
Sri Lanka’s chase was powered by Nissanka’s aggressive hitting and Perera’s fluent 58 off 32 balls. Despite early attacks from pacers Arshdeep Singh and Harshit Rana, and later spin from Kuldeep Yadav and Varun Chakravarthy, Sri Lanka couldn’t cross the line. Nissanka reached his maiden T20I century but fell just short of clinching a victory for his side.
The thrilling encounter highlighted India’s depth in batting and composure under pressure, while Nissanka’s heroics gave Sri Lanka a memorable outing despite the tie.
