Asia Cup: Pathum Nissanka’s blazing century in vain as India edge Sri Lanka in Super Over
Pathum Nissanka’s century forced a Super Over, but India wrapped up the game with ease afterwards

DUBAI: India extended their unbeaten run in the Asia Cup 2025 after a thrilling Super Over victory over Sri Lanka, despite Pathum Nissanka’s sensational maiden T20I century. The Sri Lankan opener smashed 107 off 58 balls (7×4, 6×6), but his heroic effort went in vain as India maintained their winning momentum in the tournament.

The match itself had plenty of drama, especially in the Super Over. On the fourth delivery, Dasun Shanaka attempted a wild shot and appeared to be run out by Sanju Samson, who delivered a perfect under-arm flick to hit the stumps. However, since the delivery had already been declared dead due to a prior caught-behind review, Shanaka escaped. India, though, wasted no time as Arshdeep Singh dismissed him on the very next ball, sealing the victory.

Chasing 203, Nissanka attacked from the first ball, hitting a boundary immediately. While his opening partner Kusal Mendis fell early to Hardik Pandya, Nissanka and Kusal Perera staged a counterattack, adding 127 runs for the second wicket. Nissanka’s blistering innings, studded with 7 fours and 6 sixes, ended in the final over, while Perera contributed 58 off 32 balls before Varun Chakravarthy broke the partnership.

Sri Lanka’s lower order failed to capitalize, with Charith Asalanka scoring just 5 and Kamindu Mendis making 3. Shanaka chipped in with 22 not out off 11 balls, but with three runs needed off the final ball, a misfield and fielding fumble allowed the contest to stretch into a Super Over.

Earlier, India’s innings was powered by Abhishek Sharma (61 off 31) and Sanju Samson (39 off 22), with Tilak Varma unbeaten on 49 off 34 balls anchoring the middle order. India’s total of 202 for 5 was the highest in the tournament so far, surpassing their previous best of 188 against Oman and Afghanistan’s 188 against Hong Kong.

Sharma set the tone with his third consecutive half-century, while Samson’s arrival at No. 5 shifted the tempo, showcasing his intent with towering sixes, including one straight down the ground off Wanindu Hasaranga. Opening batsman Shubman Gill (4) fell cheaply to Maheesh Theekshana, and skipper Suryakumar Yadav (12) continued his lean patch, trapped LBW by Hasaranga.

Despite Nissanka’s historic ton, India’s collective depth and composure under pressure ensured they emerged victorious in one of the tournament’s most exciting finishes so far.
