'Hum dhund rahe Sharma ji': Cameraman leaves commentators confused by showing Tilak Varma as opener instead of Abhishek Sharma

Asia Cup 2025 served up not just high-octane cricket but also a lighthearted moment that left fans and commentators in splits during India’s Super Fours clash against Sri Lanka in Dubai.

As the Indian openers prepared to step out for the chase of 203, viewers expected to see Abhishek Sharma walking in alongside Shubman Gill. But the cameraman mischievously zoomed in on Tilak Varma, fully padded up and standing next to Gill.

The commentary box instantly burst into laughter.
“Verma ji dikh rahe hain, Sharma ji nahi hain. Hum dhund rahe Sharma ji… dikh rahe Varma ji,” one commentator quipped. Another added, “Yeh cameraman humari bhavnaon ke saath khel raha hai. Kaun hai yeh cameraman? Pata lagao!”

Eventually, the expected pair — Abhishek and Gill — did stride out, but not before the funny mix-up had gone viral.

A Match Full of Fireworks

India, put into bat, piled up 202/5 thanks to Abhishek Sharma’s classy 61 and Tilak Varma’s composed 49*. Handy cameos from Sanju Samson and Axar Patel ensured India crossed the 200-run mark.

Sri Lanka responded in style. Pathum Nissanka hammered his maiden T20I century and, along with Kusal Perera (58), stitched a blazing 127-run stand that had India under serious pressure. With 12 needed in the final over, Harshit Rana dismissed Nissanka first ball, but Sri Lanka clawed back to level scores at 202/5, forcing a Super Over.

Left-arm pacer Arshdeep Singh then rose to the occasion, conceding just two runs and grabbing two wickets. Suryakumar Yadav and Shubman Gill knocked off the target in a single delivery, sealing a dramatic win for India.

India March into Final

Though the match was a dead rubber, it had everything — runs, drama, emotions, and a hilarious cameraman blooper that fans will remember for long. With this victory, India entered the Asia Cup 2025 final against arch-rivals Pakistan as firm favourites.
