The Asia Cup 2025 trophy controversy refuses to die down as the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has announced it will formally lodge a protest against Asian Cricket Council (ACC) chairman Mohsin Naqvi at the upcoming ICC Board meeting in November.
BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia strongly condemned Naqvi’s actions during the presentation ceremony in Dubai, where the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chief allegedly walked away with the Asia Cup trophy after India refused to accept it from him.
“We had already decided not to take the trophy from the ACC chairman (Naqvi), who is one of the main leaders of Pakistan. That does not mean he can walk away with it. This is very unfortunate and unsporting. We expect the trophy and medals to be returned to India at the earliest,” Saikia said shortly after India celebrated their win on the podium without the silverware.
The fiasco delayed the post-match presentation by almost 90 minutes and left the cricketing world stunned. The Indian team, led by Suryakumar Yadav, collected their medals but refused to step forward while Naqvi stood on stage, forcing organisers to remove the trophy altogether.
Saikia confirmed that India will raise the issue during the ICC conference in Dubai in early November. He described the incident as unacceptable and vowed to push for accountability at the highest level.
Meanwhile, the BCCI announced a ₹21 crore cash reward for the Indian squad, including players and support staff, in recognition of their record ninth Asia Cup triumph. Drawing a patriotic parallel, Saikia compared the team’s success to Operation Sindoor in May, following the Pahalgam terror attacks.
“We are proud of our team. They have delivered brilliantly on the field, just as our armed forces have delivered on the borders. This is a historic and momentous occasion for Indian cricket,” Saikia added.
The controversy has now escalated into a diplomatic cricket row, ensuring that the Asia Cup 2025 trophy fiasco will remain a hot topic leading up to the ICC meeting.
