The Asia Cup 2025 trophy controversy escalated further on Sunday night as the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) launched a scathing attack on Asian Cricket Council (ACC) chairman and Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chief Mohsin Naqvi. Despite India’s thrilling five-wicket victory over Pakistan in the Dubai final, the champions were left without their trophy after Naqvi allegedly carried the silverware to his hotel.
BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia minced no words in criticising Naqvi’s behaviour, calling it “unsportsmanlike” and “totally unexpected.” He explained why India refused to accept the trophy in the first place and vowed to raise the issue at the upcoming ICC Board meeting in November.
“India is fighting a war with a country, and a leader belonging to that country was supposed to hand over the trophy to us. We cannot accept a trophy from a person who represents a country waging war against ours. But that does not mean the gentleman can take away the trophy and medals meant for our team to his hotel room. This is unacceptable, and we will launch a very strong protest at the ICC,” Saikia told ANI.
The standoff delayed the presentation ceremony by nearly 90 minutes, leaving the atmosphere in Dubai tense. Fans booed loudly as Naqvi stood on stage, while Indian players and support staff refused to approach the podium.
Saikia further confirmed that the BCCI would formally lodge a strong protest against Naqvi’s conduct at the ICC conference in Dubai in November, insisting that the trophy and medals must be returned to India immediately.

Meanwhile, on the field, Tilak Varma emerged as India’s hero, anchoring the tense chase with an unbeaten 69 off 53 balls. Despite losing wickets at regular intervals, Varma held the innings together, while Rinku Singh struck the winning boundary to seal India’s ninth Asia Cup title.
The Men in Blue may have claimed victory in the high-stakes clash, but the night will be remembered as much for India’s resilience on the pitch as for the unprecedented Asia Cup 2025 trophy fiasco that followed.
