Asia Cup 2025: Abhishek Sharma had the tournament of his life as he emerged as the leading run-scorer, finishing with 314 runs across seven matches. The explosive left-hander from Punjab consistently gave India fiery starts in the powerplay, scoring 30-plus in six out of seven games. His performances were so impactful that he was rightly crowned Player of the Tournament after India’s thrilling five-wicket win over Pakistan in the final at the Dubai International Stadium.
But Abhishek didn’t just take home runs and awards—he also left behind a cheeky parting shot aimed at Pakistan’s pace spearhead Shaheen Shah Afridi.
The two had already clashed earlier in the Super 4s stage when Abhishek smacked Shaheen for a six off the first ball and told him to “go back and bowl.” Shaheen, visibly fired up, charged in aggressively during that spell. Their rivalry, in fact, goes way back to the U19 World Cup 2018, where Shaheen had heated exchanges with both Abhishek and Shubman Gill.
In the Asia Cup 2025 final, Abhishek managed a boundary against Shaheen in the opening over but eventually lost his wicket to Faheem Ashraf. However, the drama picked up later when Abhishek, speaking at the post-match presentation, made a subtle dig at Afridi.
“If you see, I had a plan. Whether it’s spinners or fast bowlers—even premium fast bowlers—I always look to attack from the very first ball,” Abhishek said with a grin. The crowd immediately erupted in cheers, recognizing the sly jab at Afridi standing nearby.
Adding to his dream night, Abhishek also drove away with a brand-new car as part of his Player of the Tournament award. “Getting a car is always a pleasure,” he said, smiling.
Abhishek’s rise has been meteoric. After a standout IPL 2024 season with SunRisers Hyderabad, he grabbed his T20I opportunity following the retirement of stalwarts Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli. With intent and fearless batting, he has now cemented his place in India’s T20 setup.

“Getting into this team after the World Cup win wasn’t easy for any opener. My role was clear—I had to show intent from the first ball. For that, you need strong backing from your captain and coach, and I was lucky to have that support,” Abhishek reflected.
He added, “Sometimes this approach means you will fail, but the process is what matters. My only goal was to make an impact for the team and ensure India keeps winning.”
With his performances and a spicy new rivalry against Shaheen Afridi, Abhishek Sharma has certainly announced himself as one of India’s brightest stars in T20 cricket.
