BCCI set to lodge protest against ACC chief Mohsin Naqvi after India-Pakistan Asia Cup drama

BCCI to protest against ACC chief Mohsin Naqvi over Asia Cup 2025 trophy row – The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is preparing to lodge a strong protest after the Asia Cup 2025 final trophy controversy involving Asian Cricket Council (ACC) chairman Mohsin Naqvi.

India defeated Pakistan in a thrilling final in Dubai on Sunday to clinch their ninth Asia Cup title. However, the post-match ceremony turned chaotic after India refused to accept the trophy from Naqvi, who also serves as Pakistan’s Interior Minister. In a shocking turn, Naqvi allegedly walked away with the trophy, leaving the Indian team to celebrate without it.

BCCI confirms protest

Speaking to TOI, BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia confirmed that the Board will raise the issue in the upcoming ACC meeting in Dubai on Tuesday.

“We had decided not to take the trophy from ACC chairman Mohsin Naqvi. However, that does not mean the gentleman will take away the trophy. Our representatives Rajiv Shukla and Ashish Shelar will raise a serious objection against him for illegally retaining it. He has no right to keep it,” Saikia said.

If the ACC fails to act, the BCCI plans to escalate the matter to the ICC conference in Dubai in November.

Unprecedented presentation drama

The presentation ceremony was delayed by nearly 90 minutes following India’s victory, before ending in unprecedented drama as Naqvi allegedly left the venue with the trophy instead of handing it to India’s captain, Suryakumar Yadav.

Saikia criticized the handling of the ceremony, calling it “very unfortunate and unsporting,” and expressed hope that the trophy and medals would be returned to India soon.

BCCI announces cash prize

Despite the controversy, the BCCI announced a cash reward of ₹21 crore for the Indian squad, including players and support staff, to celebrate their record-extending triumph. Saikia compared the victory to India’s armed forces’ valor, drawing a symbolic link with Operation Sindoor conducted earlier this year after the Pahalgam terror attacks.

“We are very proud of our team. They delivered brilliantly on the cricket pitch, just like our armed forces protected the nation at the border in May. Now the same thing has been repeated in Dubai. This is a momentous occasion for Indian cricket,” he added.
