Women’s ODI World Cup 2025 returns to India after 12 years, and captain Harmanpreet Kaur believes her team is excited rather than burdened by the expectations of playing at home. On the eve of the opener against Sri Lanka in Guwahati, Kaur expressed confidence in India’s preparation and readiness.
“The World Cup is returning to India after 12 years, but there is no pressure at all for us,” Kaur said. “In the practice matches, we tried to tick all the boxes. We are excited that we are getting the opportunity to play in home conditions. As cricketers, we cannot ask for anything more.”
The Indian skipper also highlighted the impact of home support. “Whenever we play in India, fans come out in big numbers to cheer for us. Even abroad, we’ve had their support. I hope this World Cup will be special for both the players and the fans. We want to create special memories together,” she added.
India’s recent record in ODIs has been impressive, something Kaur believes will help them in the tournament. “We played more ODIs after the last T20 World Cup and won most of them. That has given us confidence to perform well in this format. This group has a lot of experience playing together,” she said.

Meanwhile, Sri Lanka captain Chamari Athapaththu is equally thrilled about competing in home-like conditions, with many of their fixtures also scheduled in familiar venues. She acknowledged India’s strength but promised a strong challenge.
“Since the tournament is being held in India, they are naturally strong contenders. But we are equally determined to give our best. As co-hosts, we want to play our finest cricket. And I really hope an Asian team wins this World Cup for the first time,” Athapaththu said.
As the World Cup kicks off, all eyes will be on India to see if Kaur’s confidence and the team’s recent form can translate into a dream campaign on home soil.
