BCCI Confronts ACC Over Asia Cup Trophy Delay, Naqvi Forced to Acknowledge India’s Victory

Represented by vice-president Rajiv Shukla and former treasurer Ashish Shelar, the BCCI pressed ACC president Mohsin Naqvi to first recognize India’s triumph before the proceedings could continue. At Shelar’s insistence, Naqvi eventually mentioned India’s Asia Cup victory in his opening remarks.

However, the meeting quickly soured. The BCCI representatives expressed strong displeasure over the refusal to hand over the trophy and medals to India’s winning side led by Suryakumar Yadav, who defeated Pakistan in the final on Sunday. Following their protest, the Indian officials walked out of the meeting.

The BCCI has made it clear that the matter will now be escalated to the International Cricket Council (ICC) in November.

“We had decided not to take the trophy from the ACC chairman, who is also a senior leader in Pakistan. But that doesn’t mean he can withhold the trophy and medals. It is unsporting and unfortunate. We will lodge a formal complaint in the ICC,” BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia stated.

The dispute arose after India refused to accept the trophy from Naqvi, in line with the team’s stance of avoiding any ceremonial interactions with Pakistan amid heightened diplomatic tensions following the Pahalgam terror attack and India’s Operation Sindoor.

Despite dominating Pakistan throughout the tournament with three convincing wins, India’s players remain without their silverware. The charged India-Pakistan rivalry added further heat to the issue, with both sides engaging in bold celebrations and subtle references to ongoing political tensions.

With no solution reached, the ACC meeting was adjourned, leaving Asia’s major cricket boards – India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, and Afghanistan – to reconvene later to address the standoff.
