GUWAHATI: India got off to a winning start in the 2025 ICC Women’s ODI World Cup, overcoming a middle-order collapse to beat Sri Lanka by 59 runs at Barsapara Cricket Stadium on Tuesday.

After opting to bat first, India’s innings had its share of drama. Openers Pratika Rawal and Harleen Deol gave India a steady start with a 67-run partnership. However, once Rawal fell to Sri Lanka spinner Inoka Ranaweera, the middle order faltered, sliding from 120/2 to 124/6 in just two overs. Smriti Mandhana departed early, attempting an ambitious off-side shot, while captain Harmanpreet Kaur also fell to Ranaweera’s spin magic.

At 124/6, India’s chances seemed bleak. Enter Amanjot Kaur and Deepti Sharma, who stitched a remarkable 103-run partnership for the seventh wicket. Both batters displayed composure under pressure, scoring at more than a run-a-ball. Amanjot contributed 57 off 56 balls, while Sharma matched her with a 53-run knock off 53 deliveries. Lower-order all-rounder Sneh Rana added a late flourish, smashing 28 off 15 balls, including two sixes and two fours, taking India to a final total of 270 under the DLS method.

Sri Lanka’s chase started promisingly, reaching 80/1 in the 15th over. But Sharma turned the tide, dismissing captain Chamari Athapaththu (43 off 47) on the last ball of the 15th over. She later accounted for Kavisha Dilhari (15) and Anushka Sanjeewani (6), finishing with impressive figures of 3/54 from her 10 overs. Sneh Rana (2/32) and Shree Charani (2/37) complemented Sharma’s effort, applying relentless pressure in the middle overs. Medium pacers Amanjot Kaur and Pratika Rawal chipped in with a wicket apiece.

Despite Nilakshika da Silva’s valiant 35 off 29 balls, hitting four boundaries and a six, India’s bowlers tightened the noose and ensured Sri Lanka ended at 211, handing India a comprehensive 59-run victory.

The match also witnessed record attendance, with 22,843 spectators—the highest ever for an ICC Women’s World Cup match, surpassing the previous record of 15,935 set during the 2024 T20 World Cup clash between India and Pakistan in Dubai.

India’s victory highlighted the depth of their squad, with seasoned players like Deepti Sharma guiding younger talent like Amanjot Kaur and ensuring that a potential collapse turned into a memorable win. This promising start sets the tone for India’s campaign in the Women’s ODI World Cup 2025.
