Asia Cup Controversy: The controversy surrounding the 2025 Asia Cup trophy escalated further as the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) confronted Mohsin Naqvi, president of the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) and Pakistan’s interior minister, over his act of taking away the Asia Cup trophy and medals following India’s five-wicket victory over Pakistan.

According to sources, BCCI vice-president Rajeev Shukla and former treasurer Ashish Shelar, who attended the ACC Annual General Meeting (AGM) virtually, raised a strong objection to Naqvi’s actions. “Both Shukla and Shelar completely cornered Naqvi on the issue, which wasn’t on the agenda but was taken up before the meeting concluded,” said a source familiar with the proceedings.

When BCCI officials demanded the return of the trophy and medals, Naqvi suggested that Indian captain Suryakumar Yadav could collect them from the ACC office in Dubai. The BCCI was firm in its stance that the Indian team would not accept the trophy directly from Naqvi. Following the assertive presentation of India’s position, Naqvi reportedly went on the backfoot and appeared subdued.

Bangladesh Cricket Board president Aminul Islam Bulbul suggested that the matter be resolved later with mediation. The issue is now expected to be handled between Naqvi and the BCCI, with hopes of an amicable resolution. The BCCI has also indicated that if a solution is not reached, it may lodge a formal complaint with the International Cricket Council (ICC).

Sources revealed that Naqvi believed, as ACC president, he was the only person authorized to present the trophy on stage. However, BCCI officials clarified that there was no such mandate, citing Sri Lanka Cricket president Shammi Silva presenting the trophy to Sri Lanka in 2022, rather than the ACC chairman at the time, Jay Shah. The BCCI also emphasized that India’s decision was influenced by Naqvi’s recent anti-India social media posts.

“No country attending the AGM supported Naqvi’s actions,” the source added. “Countries like Malaysia, Indonesia, and Sri Lanka voiced support for India’s position.”

The Asia Cup trophy dispute continues to spark debate, highlighting the growing tensions between cricketing boards amidst political undercurrents.
