Women’s World Cup 2025: The spotlight may have been on Deepti Sharma after her match-winning all-round performance against Sri Lanka in Guwahati, but it was Amanjot Kaur who won hearts with her fearless batting, handy bowling, and quick wit at the press conference.
While Deepti anchored India’s innings with a steady run-a-ball 53 and later picked up 3/54 in her 10 overs, Amanjot’s attacking style turned the game on its head. Making her ODI World Cup debut, the pace-bowling all-rounder smashed a maiden half-century when India were under pressure at 124/6. She then opened the bowling in Renuka Singh’s absence, sharing the new ball with rookie Kranti Gaud, finishing with figures of 1/37 in six overs.
Fearless with the bat, sharp with words
Amanjot’s counter-attacking knock lifted both her team and the crowd, which was subdued following the tragic passing of Assamese icon Zubeen Garg. Off the field, the 25-year-old Punjabi continued to entertain, drawing laughter at the post-match press conference.
“You can’t say India was in trouble. I was yet to bat,” she quipped when asked about India’s early collapse. She added with a grin, “It is said that a wounded lion takes a step back only to take a big leap.”
Her one-liners instantly went viral, with many fans calling her “India’s new poster girl for fearless cricket.”

Comeback after setbacks
Amanjot also opened up about skipping the recent ODI series against Australia to stay fresh for the World Cup. “Either I give 100% or nothing. I didn’t want to play at 80–90% fitness,” she said. Despite being dropped thrice during her innings, she credited her maturity gained from past injuries:
“Injury was never bad luck. In those months, I learnt more than I did in six years of cricket.”
Her bold outlook also reflects in her batting mindset:
“If I play slow and get out, you’ll say I wasted deliveries. At least if I attack, the next batter has more balls to work with. Ultimately, we need runs on the board.”
The turning point
For Deepti Sharma, the 103-run stand with Amanjot was the defining moment of the game. “That partnership was the turning point. On this pitch, I trusted my basics and bowled stump-to-stump. A good start to the tournament sets the tone,” Deepti said.
Sri Lanka’s Inoka Ranaweera, who bagged 4/46, also saw positives for her side despite the loss: “We had a good bowling effort and a decent partnership with the bat. That’s something we can build on.”
With her fearless cricket and charismatic words, Amanjot Kaur has not only given India a winning start but also emerged as one of the most exciting personalities of this World Cup.
