Ahmedabad: India dominated proceedings on Day 2 of the first Test against West Indies, piling up 448/5 at stumps and extending their lead to 286 runs. With three centuries scored on the same day — by KL Rahul (100), Dhruv Jurel (125), and Ravindra Jadeja (104)* — the hosts are firmly on course to break their streak of three consecutive home defeats against New Zealand.
It was a landmark day in Ahmedabad, even if the stands were relatively empty after long Garba nights left the crowd energy muted. Each century carried its own unique celebration — Rahul dedicated his knock to his toddler, Jadeja marked his with the trademark sword celebration, while Jurel saluted the Indian Army in tribute to his father, a Kargil War veteran.
The pitch had eased up under the sun, though some rough patches offered assistance to spinners. However, the West Indies attack lacked penetration. Left-arm spinners Jomel Warrican and Khary Pierre failed to exploit the conditions, allowing Indian batters to score freely.

India did lose Shubman Gill (50) to a reverse sweep attempt and Rahul soon after lunch, but the middle-order pair of Jadeja and Jurel took full advantage. Jadeja attacked the spinners early with straight sixes, while Jurel wore down the bowlers, playing with composure and calculated risks. His maiden Test century further solidified his credentials as India’s most reliable back-up to Rishabh Pant.
Speaking after play, Jurel said:
“The pitch was good and getting better. Jaddu bhai and I spoke about batting with minimal risks. I try to control what I can and score runs whenever I get the opportunity.”
Jadeja, still unbeaten, continues a stellar run with the bat, having now registered seven 50-plus scores in his last five Tests, including two centuries.
With India’s pacers doing the early damage and the spinners expected to come into play on Day 3, the hosts will fancy their chances of wrapping up the match quickly.
