Danish Kaneria on Indian citizenship rumors: Former Pakistan leg-spinner Danish Kaneria has cleared the air regarding speculation that he might seek Indian citizenship. Addressing the matter on social media platform X, Kaneria firmly stated that while India holds a special place in his heart as his Matrubhumi, he has no plans to apply for Indian nationality.

Kaneria, a Hindu by faith, currently resides in the United States with his family. He expressed pride in his Pakistani identity but also highlighted the discrimination he faced throughout his career, including pressure from authorities and the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) to convert his religion.

“Many people ask why I don’t speak about Pakistan, why I comment on Bharat’s internal issues, and some even allege that I do so to obtain Indian citizenship. I want to set the record straight,” Kaneria wrote.
“From Pakistan and its people, I received love, but I also faced severe discrimination from the authorities and the PCB. There were even attempts to forcefully convert me. Regarding India, let me be very clear — Pakistan may be my Janmabhoomi, but Bharat, the land of my ancestors, is my Matrubhumi. For me, Bharat is like a temple. I currently have no plans to seek Indian citizenship, though the CAA exists for people like me if I ever choose to.”

Kaneria also assured followers about his safety, stating, “With the blessings of Prabhu Shri Ram, I am safe and happy with my family. My fate rests in the hands of Lord Ram.”

The 44-year-old, who played 61 Tests and 18 ODIs for Pakistan between 2000 and 2010, was one of the country’s most successful leg-spinners. However, his cricketing career came to an abrupt halt after the England and Wales Cricket Board handed him a lifetime ban in 2012 for involvement in spot-fixing. The ban effectively ended his chances of participating in any official cricket under ECB’s jurisdiction.

Now settled in the USA, Kaneria has taken a more vocal stand on social and political issues, promising to expose what he calls “anti-nationals and pseudo-secularists” who he believes are harming society’s values and unity.

His statement has reignited discussions about religion, identity, and the struggles faced by minority cricketers in Pakistan, while also drawing attention to his emotional connection with India.
