Rohit Sharma selection for Australia tour sparks debate: The selection of Rohit Sharma for India’s upcoming tour of Australia has triggered fresh debate in cricketing circles, particularly after the veteran opener was stripped of ODI captaincy just months after leading India to Champions Trophy 2025 glory.
Former India wicketkeeper and selector Saba Karim has voiced strong criticism of the move, questioning the BCCI’s long-term vision for the 2027 World Cup.
Saba Karim questions selectors’ clarity
Karim, who has served both as a national selector and BCCI’s General Manager of Cricket Operations, did not hold back while expressing his concerns. He argued that if the selectors don’t see Rohit as part of India’s 2027 World Cup campaign, then his continued presence in the squad lacks logic.
“Team mein aap kyon rakh rahe hain? Agar woh captain nahin hain to phir ek baat saaf hai na ki aap unka future dekh nahi rahe. To phir aise khiladi ko team mein nahin rakhiye jo aapko lagta hai ki 2027 mein aapke hisaab se maujood nahin rahenge,” Karim said, pointing towards the inconsistent planning by the selection committee.
Ajit Agarkar’s justification
The change in ODI captaincy was explained by chief selector Ajit Agarkar, who stressed the need to give Shubman Gill adequate time to prepare as India’s next long-term ODI leader. Agarkar underlined the challenges of managing three different captains across formats, especially with a limited ODI calendar before the 2027 World Cup in South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia.
The Rohit Sharma factor: experience vs age
At 38, Rohit Sharma will be 40 when the 2027 World Cup arrives. While age is undeniably a factor, Karim highlighted that Rohit’s record as captain cannot be overlooked.
75% ODI win rate – the highest among Indian skippers with 50+ matches.
Led India to Champions Trophy 2025 victory.
Guided the team to the T20 World Cup title.
Karim argued that Rohit not only delivered trophies but also laid the foundation for India’s current ODI setup. “Unhone team ko build kiya hai, unhone aapko Champions Trophy aur T20 jitaya hai,” he said, questioning why the management was quick to sideline him from leadership.
A mixed message from selectors
The squad for the Australia tour has raised eyebrows among fans and experts alike. If India are indeed planning for the long term, retaining Rohit Sharma in the squad while taking away captaincy appears contradictory. On the other hand, if his experience and presence remain valuable, stripping him of leadership responsibilities seems equally puzzling.
With India’s roadmap to the 2027 World Cup still appearing unclear, Rohit Sharma’s role in the team continues to be a topic of heated debate.
