Ranji Trophy: Prithvi Shaw sends strong message to selectors; slams big hundred vs Mumbai
Prithvi Shaw will play for Maharashtra in this year’s Ranji Trophy.

Prithvi Shaw Century vs Mumbai: Discarded India opener Prithvi Shaw has once again reminded everyone of his immense talent, smashing a magnificent 186-run knock against his former team Mumbai in a Ranji Trophy warm-up game. The explosive right-hander, now representing Maharashtra, showcased his hunger and determination to reclaim his spot in the Indian side with a commanding performance at the MCA International Cricket Ground.

The 25-year-old opener brought up his century in 144 balls, after reaching fifty in 84. Shaw was fluent throughout his innings, dominating both pace and spin on a true batting surface. Alongside Arshin Kulkarni, he stitched together a massive 305-run opening partnership before left-arm spinner Shams Mulani broke the stand and dismissed Shaw.

This knock comes as yet another statement of intent from the young prodigy, who had earlier made a blazing century on his Maharashtra debut in the Buchi Babu Tournament against Chhattisgarh on a tricky Chennai pitch that offered turn and uneven bounce.

Once touted as India’s next batting sensation, Shaw burst onto the scene with a dream Test debut century (134) against the West Indies in 2018 at Rajkot, at just 18 years of age. However, inconsistency and off-field challenges saw him drift out of the national setup. His last Test appearance came in 2020 during the Adelaide pink-ball match, and his last India outing was a white-ball series in July 2021.

With form and confidence returning, Shaw’s current run of performances could not have come at a better time. His intent and shot selection reflect a matured version of the once reckless stroke-maker — signaling that he’s ready for another shot at the big stage.

Meanwhile, Maharashtra will begin their Ranji Trophy 2025-26 campaign on October 15 against Kerala, followed by a clash against Chandigarh from October 25 to 28. The team will also face Saurashtra, Karnataka, Punjab, Goa, and Madhya Pradesh in their remaining Elite Group B fixtures.
