New Delhi: India’s head coach Gautam Gambhir hosted a special team dinner at his Rajinder Nagar residence on Wednesday night, ahead of the second and final Test against the West Indies at the Arun Jaitley Stadium. The gathering — attended by players, support staff, and senior officials — was aimed at fostering unity before India’s upcoming tour of Australia, which begins on October 19.

The players arrived in casual attire, and a video showing Shubman Gill, Jasprit Bumrah, KL Rahul, Axar Patel, Dhruv Jurel, Prasidh Krishna, Ryan ten Doeschate, and Morne Morkel walking into Gambhir’s house quickly went viral on social media. BCCI vice-president Rajeev Shukla was also among the attendees.

However, fans online were quick to notice the absence of Harshit Rana, sparking a wave of memes and speculation. Many joked that the Delhi pacer, who was not part of the current Test squad, had been left out even of Gambhir’s “guest list.”

The social media frenzy was finally put to rest after a new video surfaced later in the night showing Harshit Rana arriving separately to join the dinner. The young fast bowler is not part of the Test setup but will travel with the Indian team for the upcoming ODI and T20I series in Australia.

Harshit’s appearance came amid renewed debate over his selection for India’s limited-overs squads. His inclusion for the Australia tour — following a modest showing in the Asia Cup 2025 — had reignited criticism online, with many calling him a “Gambhir favourite.”

The 23-year-old was fast-tracked into the national side after a breakout IPL 2024 season under Gambhir’s mentorship at Kolkata Knight Riders, but his international performances since then have failed to match the hype. In the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, he managed just four wickets from two matches at an average of 50.75. His economy rate in white-ball cricket has also been under scrutiny, touching above 10 in the last IPL season.

Former India captain Kris Srikkanth recently slammed the selection committee for persisting with Rana.

“You don’t pick some players even if they perform well, and you take others even if they don’t. If you pick Harshit Rana and Nitish Kumar Reddy for the 2027 World Cup cycle, then you can wave goodbye to the trophy,” Srikkanth said on his YouTube channel.

He also criticised Rana’s on-field attitude:

“Harshit does too many filmy gimmicks. Aggression is fine, but showboating doesn’t help. You need to bowl well consistently, not just act aggressive.”

While the debate around his selection continues, Harshit Rana’s presence at Gambhir’s team dinner has once again placed him under the spotlight — this time, not for his bowling, but for being part of the ongoing chatter surrounding India’s next generation of fast bowlers.
