In a nerve-wracking encounter at the ACA-VDCA Stadium in Visakhapatnam, South Africa Women clinched a thrilling three-wicket win over a determined Bangladesh side in the Women’s World Cup 2025 league stage on Monday.

Chasing 233 for victory, South Africa made a shaky start as Tazmin Brits fell for a second consecutive duck. Laura Wolvaardt (31) and Anneke Bosch steadied the innings with a 55-run stand before quick wickets once again gave Bangladesh hope of an upset.

The middle order also stumbled as Annerie Dercksen and Sinalo Jafta were dismissed cheaply, leaving the Proteas under pressure. However, the experienced duo of Marizanne Kapp (56) and Chloe Tryon (62) rose to the occasion, adding a crucial 85-run partnership to bring the chase back on track.

Even after their dismissals, the chase went down to the wire, with 35 runs needed from 31 balls. As she did against India, Nadine de Klerk (37 not out) held her composure to guide South Africa home in 49.3 overs, sealing another tight finish for the Proteas.

Earlier, Bangladesh produced a spirited batting display. Openers Fargana Hoque (30) and Rubya Haider gave the side a solid start with a 53-run opening stand before de Klerk struck the first blow. Sharmin Akhter (50) and captain Nigar Sultana (32) built a steady partnership, adding 77 runs to keep Bangladesh on course for a competitive total.

The innings gained late momentum thanks to Shorna Akter (51 not out), who played a fearless knock that included powerful shots and smart running. Her maiden half-century helped Bangladesh post 232/6 in 50 overs.

Despite the valiant effort, Bangladesh’s dream of a famous win slipped away when Shorna dropped a crucial catch of de Klerk in the penultimate over, allowing South Africa to complete the chase.
