Sanju Samson’s Big Opportunity: Can He Deliver for CSK Against RCB at Chinnaswamy?

Sanju Samson has had a quiet start to life at Chennai Super Kings, but former India all-rounder Irfan Pathan believes one strong performance could change the entire narrative around his move.

Samson joined CSK ahead of IPL 2026 after being traded from Rajasthan Royals, retaining his existing contract value of INR 18 crore. The expectation around his arrival was significant, yet his first two innings for the franchise have produced only 6 and 7 runs respectively. Combined with CSK losing both their opening matches, the pressure on Samson has mounted quickly.

That pressure now arrives at a critical juncture. CSK face Royal Challengers Bengaluru at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium on Sunday, a venue historically known for favoring batters. It is the kind of setting where reputations can be restored in a single session.

Why CSK Invested So Heavily in Samson

Pathan offered an important perspective ahead of the fixture, suggesting that CSK’s thinking around Samson goes beyond the present moment. According to him, the franchise did not bring Samson in simply to fill a top-order slot. The longer-term plan, Pathan believes, is to groom him as a central figure for a post-Dhoni era at CSK.

“As far as the future is concerned, Chennai have brought in Sanju Samson as a potential face of the team after MS Dhoni,” Pathan said. “He hasn’t scored runs in the first two matches, even on a pitch where batting has improved.”

The context matters here. Samson was among the most high-profile transfers of the pre-season window, and stepping into a wicketkeeper-batter role at a franchise still so closely identified with Dhoni is not straightforward. The slow start has intensified attention on every ball he faces, but it has not, at least according to Pathan, altered the franchise’s long-term thinking.

Pathan Backs Samson to Deliver in Bengaluru

Beyond the broader analysis, Pathan made a specific and confident prediction for Sunday’s contest. He said he expects Samson to produce a significant innings at Chinnaswamy, and that doing so could mark the beginning of a new chapter for both the player and the team.

“The next match is in Bengaluru, and I expect Sanju Samson to score runs there. If that happens, then Chennai’s thinking of making him the face of the team after MS Dhoni could start taking shape,” Pathan said. “I have a gut feeling that Sanju will score in this match.”

For a batter finding his footing at a new franchise under an unforgiving spotlight, a venue like Chinnaswamy could serve as the perfect stage. The conditions tend to offer more pace and carry off the surface, and Samson’s natural game — attacking, boundary-heavy, and instinct-driven — suits such a surface well. One good innings in a high-profile game can quickly shift a player’s season and the public perception around it.

Kohli Adds Another Dimension to an Already Charged Fixture

While much of the pre-match discussion has centered on Samson, Pathan also drew attention to the threat RCB carry into Sunday’s contest, particularly through Virat Kohli.

Kohli opened the RCB season with an unbeaten 69 off 38 balls against Sunrisers Hyderabad, hitting five fours and five sixes at a strike rate of 181.58. It was the kind of innings that reminded everyone why he remains one of the most complete batters in the format, regardless of age.

“The way he scored runs in the first match at a strike rate of 182, he doesn’t look like a 37-year-old at all. He is extremely agile in the field, and with his running between the wickets, you might get tired, but he will not,” Pathan said.

Kohli’s form gives RCB a clear advantage heading into the game. They arrive with momentum, a settled unit, and their biggest match-winner already in rhythm. CSK, on the other hand, are looking to avoid a third consecutive defeat in what is still an early but uncomfortable position in the standings.

What Sunday’s Match Means

The CSK versus RCB fixture rarely needs additional context to generate interest, but this edition carries genuine stakes. For CSK, it is a chance to turn their season around before the pressure compounds further. For Samson, it is an opportunity to justify the confidence his new franchise has placed in him and begin fulfilling the role they envisioned when they brought him in.

Whether Pathan’s prediction proves accurate remains to be seen. But with a batter-friendly surface, a high-profile opponent, and growing scrutiny around his returns, Sunday at Chinnaswamy is precisely the kind of game that can define how the rest of a player’s season unfolds.
