Abhishek Sharma Asia Cup 2025 – From being mentored by Yuvraj Singh to becoming India’s brightest young batting sensation, Abhishek Sharma’s rise has been nothing short of remarkable. The left-handed opener from Amritsar dominated the Asia Cup 2025, finishing as the tournament’s highest run-scorer with 314 runs in seven matches and clinching the Player of the Tournament award.

After lifting the trophy, the first thing Abhishek did was share a picture with his mentor, Yuvraj Singh, who has been instrumental in shaping his career. Yuvraj even jokingly commented on Abhishek’s Instagram post, “Single bhi lelo Maharaj (Take a single as well),” reflecting the youngster’s aggressive, boundary-heavy style of play.

Throughout the Asia Cup, Abhishek provided India with explosive starts alongside his close friend Shubman Gill, consistently attacking inside the powerplay. Though he missed out in the final against Pakistan with just five runs, his performances left a lasting impact and marked him as India’s go-to opener in high-pressure matches.

Currently ranked the No.1 T20I batter in the world, Abhishek holds the highest ICC rating points in history for the format. His fearless strokeplay, natural six-hitting ability, and maturity at just 24 years old have already drawn comparisons with his mentor Yuvraj Singh.

Yuvraj’s Influence and IPL Coach’s Insights

Simon Helmot, assistant coach of SunRisers Hyderabad (SRH), who has worked closely with both Yuvraj (in 2016) and Abhishek, sees striking similarities between the two.
“Neither of them spends practice sessions trying to hit sixes. It comes naturally. Abhi, like Yuvi, focuses on balance, body position, and striking the ball cleanly. His method is precise — he works on gaps, strike rotation, and grows into hitting sixes with confidence during matches,” Helmot explained.

Helmot further praised Abhishek’s work ethic and training discipline, describing how the youngster prepares for match-day scenarios in nets, often replicating conditions and bowlers he expects to face. His calm pre-match routine, including short meditation and visualization, reflects his focused mindset.

Taking On Shaheen Afridi and Beyond

One of Abhishek’s standout moments came against Pakistan’s Shaheen Shah Afridi, when he dispatched the very first delivery — a bouncer — for a six. That confidence stems from his meticulous planning and studying opposition bowlers on off-days.

Helmot added, “He trains with purpose. He doesn’t overhit in practice but ensures he gets what he needs to go into a game fully confident.”

The ‘Travishek’ Effect in IPL

Abhishek’s IPL partnership with Australian opener Travis Head, fondly dubbed ‘Travishek’, has redefined powerplay batting. Their aggressive approach has unsettled bowlers and changed how teams view opening strategies.

With his Asia Cup heroics, IPL success, and growing maturity, Abhishek Sharma stands at the cusp of becoming India’s next global batting superstar — carrying forward the fearless legacy of his mentor, Yuvraj Singh.
