The stage is set for a historic clash as India and Pakistan lock horns in the Asia Cup 2025 final at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium this Sunday. For the first time in the tournament’s four-decade history, the arch-rivals are meeting in the summit clash, and the buildup has been nothing short of dramatic.
Over the past three weeks, the Asia Cup has witnessed everything — refused handshakes, complaints against match officials, fiery post-match comments, disciplinary hearings, and even delayed games. Add to that the tense political backdrop following the Pahalgam terror attack in May, and the stakes for this final could not be higher.
Despite the political tensions, cricketing logic still paints India as the clear favorite. The Men in Blue have dominated this rivalry in recent years, winning 12 of the 15 T20Is since 2007 and emerging victorious in their last seven white-ball encounters. Their recent six-wicket win in the Super Four stage showcased just how comfortably they have handled Pakistan.
Suryakumar Yadav, India’s captain, even downplayed the rivalry, remarking after that win:
“If two teams play 15–20 matches and it’s 7-7 or 8-7, then you call it a rivalry. But 13-0, 10-1… this is not a rivalry anymore.”
For Pakistan, this final represents both a challenge and an opportunity. With an 8-4 record in white-ball tournament finals, Salman Agha’s side will be banking on their unpredictability to spring a surprise. Coach Mike Hesson has pointed to their competitiveness in the last meeting with India, where a target of 172 was chased down by India with seven balls to spare — thanks largely to Abhishek Sharma’s sublime form.
India, however, faces a couple of concerns. Abhishek Sharma and Hardik Pandya both struggled with cramps in the Super Over win against Sri Lanka on Friday. Bowling coach Morne Morkel confirmed that Abhishek is fit but added that Hardik’s situation will be assessed closer to the final.
With form, history, and momentum all on India’s side, Pakistan will need a near-perfect performance to break the streak. But if there’s one thing cricket fans know, it’s that Pakistan thrives on unpredictability.
So, as the clock ticks down to 8 p.m. IST on Sunday, one question remains: Can Pakistan halt the Indian juggernaut? Or will India extend their dominance on the grandest Asia Cup stage yet?
