Dhruv Jurel showed brilliant presence of mind behind the stumps on Day 1 of the opening Test between India and West Indies in Ahmedabad, ensuring Jasprit Bumrah didn’t miss out on a crucial wicket.

The incident occurred in the seventh over when Bumrah bowled a teasing good-length delivery to John Campbell. The West Indies opener went for a drive but appeared to edge the ball, with Jurel completing a clean catch. Despite loud appeals from Bumrah and the keeper, on-field umpire Richard Illingworth turned it down.
Skipper Shubman Gill was unsure about reviewing the decision, but Jurel was confident and insisted on the DRS.
“Zor se awaaz aaya hai (There was a loud noise),” Jurel told Gill, persuading him to go upstairs.
UltraEdge eventually confirmed a faint edge, overturning the on-field call and sending Campbell back. It was a big breakthrough for India, showcasing the young wicketkeeper’s quick instincts in the absence of Rishabh Pant.
After the early strike, Mohammed Siraj spearheaded India’s attack with a fiery spell, finishing with 4/40. He ripped through West Indies’ top order in the morning session and added another scalp after lunch, narrowly missing out on a five-wicket haul.
Jasprit Bumrah backed him up with figures of 3/42, producing his trademark yorkers and looking in strong red-ball rhythm.
Spinner Kuldeep Yadav (2/25) also played his part, delivering a beauty to dismiss Shai Hope before wrapping up the innings by removing Jomel Warrican.
The West Indies were bowled out for 162 shortly before tea, leaving India in a commanding position on the very first day of the series opener.
