Harshit Rana selection for India’s upcoming ODI series against Australia has sparked major controversy, with former India captain and ex-chairman of selectors Krishnamachari Srikkanth openly questioning the decision. Speaking on his YouTube channel, Srikkanth blasted the team management for what he described as “confusing and inconsistent” selection policies, particularly pointing at Rana’s place in the squad.
Rana, who debuted across formats within just four months since November 2024, was included as one of the four specialist pacers for the three-match ODI series in Australia. Despite being part of the recent Asia Cup-winning team, his selection has raised eyebrows due to his inconsistent performances.
Srikkanth did not hold back in his criticism.
“By constantly chopping and changing players, the selectors are shaking their confidence. Today Yashasvi Jaiswal is there, tomorrow he’s not. The only permanent name seems to be Harshit Rana — and nobody knows why. If this continues, you can forget about preparing for the 2027 World Cup,” Srikkanth said.
The veteran also questioned the omission of Sanju Samson as a wicketkeeping backup and hinted that favoritism might be influencing selections.
“You don’t pick some players even if they perform, while others stay in despite average shows. If being close to the right people is all it takes, then what’s the point of performance?” he added.
Rana’s track record in international cricket hasn’t been too convincing so far. He made his Test debut during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Australia, where he picked four wickets across two matches. Later, he played his first ODI against England and was part of India’s Champions Trophy squad in the UAE. In the Asia Cup, however, he managed just two wickets while conceding 79 runs in two games, with his performance against Sri Lanka (1/54) drawing particular criticism.
Srikkanth also slammed Rana’s on-field behavior, calling it more “showboating” than aggression.
“Harshit Rana does too many filmy gimmicks. These reactions may work in the IPL but not at the international level. He dives when it’s too late, reacts for the cameras — but bowling well is what matters. This kind of attitude is dangerous for a young cricketer,” he said.
The debate over Rana’s inclusion has once again highlighted broader concerns about India’s team-building process. Frequent squad reshuffles, questionable omissions, and lack of clarity in selection strategy are being seen as obstacles to creating a settled core ahead of future tournaments.
As India heads into the ODI series against Australia, the focus will not just be on the performances on the field but also on whether the selectors can strike the right balance between giving chances to youngsters and maintaining stability within the squad.
