New Delhi: India’s decision to enforce the follow-on on the third day of their Test against West Indies at Arun Jaitley Stadium surprised many, but according to assistant coach Ryan Ten Doeschate, it was a calculated move based on pitch conditions and match dynamics.

After dismissing the visitors for 248 runs in their first innings — thanks to Kuldeep Yadav’s five-wicket haul (5/82) and Ravindra Jadeja’s 3/46 — India chose not to bat again despite holding a commanding 270-run lead.

By stumps, the West Indies showed fight, reaching 173/2 in their second innings, with John Campbell (87)* and Shai Hope (66)* narrowing the deficit to 97 runs.

Coach Reveals the Thinking Behind the Follow-On Call

Speaking after the day’s play, Ten Doeschate revealed that there had been a discussion within the Indian camp about whether to bat again, but the management ultimately decided the time was right to press for victory.

“There was a discussion to bat. Those last two wickets took a little bit longer than we hoped, and we were leaning toward batting again. But we felt a lead of 270 was strong. We also believed the wicket would deteriorate quickly, and enforcing the follow-on would give us the best chance to win,” he said.

However, the coach admitted that the pitch behaved slightly differently than expected.

“It slowed down rather than breaking up. That’s cricket — sometimes surfaces don’t behave the way you anticipate,” Ten Doeschate added.

Kuldeep Yadav’s Spin Brilliance Draws Praise

Ten Doeschate reserved special praise for Kuldeep Yadav, who was the standout performer for India in the first innings.

“Kuldeep is a mystery spinner — that’s what sets him apart. There’s always that element of danger because he’s hard to read. He bowled the right lengths and turned the ball both ways beautifully,” said the coach.

Kuldeep’s five-wicket haul was instrumental in dismantling the West Indies middle order, ensuring India maintained control of the game from the start.

Leadership and Team Growth

The assistant coach also lauded Shubman Gill’s captaincy and Ravindra Jadeja’s leadership support.

“Shubman’s captaincy has developed really well. He led admirably on the England tour and has grown in confidence. Jadeja, meanwhile, is at a stage where his experience is invaluable — he’s showing how much he still has to offer,” Ten Doeschate noted.

West Indies React to India’s Bold Move

West Indies all-rounder Khary Pierre admitted he was surprised by India’s choice to enforce the follow-on but remained optimistic about his team’s chances.

“I was surprised, but it’s India — they always go for the win. We just need to bat properly and make a game of it. The match is still alive. If we can get a lead, we know the fourth and fifth days will help our bowlers,” Pierre said.

How the Match Unfolded

Earlier, India’s batting dominance was led by Yashasvi Jaiswal’s 175, Sai Sudharsan’s 87, and captain Shubman Gill’s unbeaten 129. Supported by contributions from Nitish Reddy (43) and *Dhruv Jurel (44)**, India declared their innings at 518/5.

For West Indies, Jomel Warrican was the pick of the bowlers with 3/98. In reply, the visitors struggled early, with Tagenarine Chanderpaul (34) and Alick Athanaze (41) providing brief resistance before collapsing to 140/4 by the end of Day 2.

Despite a stronger second-innings start from Campbell and Hope, India remain firm favourites heading into Day 4. With the pitch expected to deteriorate further, Kuldeep Yadav and Ravindra Jadeja could once again play decisive roles as India push for an innings victory.
