India vs Pakistan Women’s World Cup 2025 is set to grab the spotlight this Sunday in Colombo, not just for cricketing reasons but also due to the ongoing handshake controversy. After the Indian men’s team refused to shake hands with Pakistan players during the Asia Cup 2025—and even declined to accept the trophy from Asian Cricket Council chief Mohsin Naqvi—attention now turns to whether the Indian women’s team will follow suit.
The precedent was set by men’s skipper Suryakumar Yadav, who said his team stood aligned with the stance of the Indian government and the BCCI. Now, the focus is on Harmanpreet Kaur’s side as they prepare to face Pakistan in a high-stakes group-stage clash.
BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia, when asked about the matter, told BBC Stumped:
“I cannot forecast anything, but our relationship with that particular hostile country is the same; there is no change in the last week. India will play that match against Pakistan in Colombo, and all cricket protocols will be followed. Whatever is in the MCC regulations of cricket, that will be done. Whether there will be handshakes, whether there will be hugging, I cannot assure you of anything at this moment.”
Meanwhile, in recent Women’s World Cup action, Bangladesh registered a dominant seven-wicket win over Pakistan in Colombo. Debutant Rubya Haider starred with an unbeaten half-century, while Marufa Akter’s early breakthroughs left Pakistan reeling. Spinners Nahida Akter (2/19) and Shorna Akter (3/5) ensured Pakistan never recovered, as they were bowled out for 129.

Haider’s composed knock, built on precise ground strokes, guided Bangladesh to victory in 31.1 overs. For Pakistan, captain Fatima Sana admitted her side fell short with the bat, saying:
“We just lost too many wickets early on and never recovered. We need to put this defeat behind us now and bounce back stronger. A lot of our young players are learning, and hopefully they’ll gain experience from this tournament.”
As for India, Harmanpreet Kaur’s team began their World Cup campaign strongly with a win against Sri Lanka. Their upcoming clash with Pakistan promises fireworks—both on and off the field—as the handshake row continues to dominate headlines.
