India vs Pakistan Women’s World Cup toss controversy: A bizarre incident at the R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo added fresh drama to the high-stakes Women’s World Cup 2025 clash between India and Pakistan on Sunday. Pakistan captain Fatima Sana found herself at the centre of a storm after she stayed silent during a toss mix-up, a move that has now gone viral online.

The moment, missed by broadcasters but spotted by fans, unfolded when India skipper Harmanpreet Kaur flipped the coin. Sana clearly called “tails” into the microphone. However, match referee Shandre Fritz and broadcaster Mel Jones mistakenly declared that she had called “heads.” To Sana’s luck, the coin landed on heads. Instead of correcting the error, the Pakistan captain accepted the outcome, effectively walking away with a toss win that should have gone to India.

Even Harmanpreet, standing alongside, did not pick up on the mistake in real-time. None of the on-air experts flagged the error either. But once the match began, clips of the incident spread rapidly on social media, sparking debate over fairness and officiating in such high-profile contests.

Pakistan Win Toss

Benefiting from the referee’s blunder, Sana opted to bowl first. Pakistan made one change, with Sadaf Shamas coming in for Omaima Sohail.
“Looks like there could be some moisture on the wicket. Our confidence is great, hopefully we’ll play better today. Anything under 250 could be a good chase,” Sana said at the toss presentation.

India, meanwhile, brought in Renuka Thakur for Amanjot Kaur.
“We played a good series here before the World Cup. We’re thinking positively and are looking to do well,” Harmanpreet remarked.

Heading into the clash, India were buoyed by their rain-affected victory over Sri Lanka, while Pakistan were under pressure after their opening defeat to Bangladesh.

Debate Over Fairness

The toss controversy has triggered widespread criticism, with fans questioning why neither the referee nor the broadcasters corrected the error. It remains to be seen whether India will lodge an official complaint, but the incident has already cast a shadow over one of the tournament’s most anticipated encounters.
