KL Rahul’s purple patch in Test cricket continues, and experts believe 2025 could turn out to be the finest year of his career.

The 32-year-old opener once again stood tall on Day 1 of the first Test against West Indies at the Narendra Modi Stadium, scoring an unbeaten 53 off 114 balls to guide India to 121/2 at stumps after the visitors collapsed for just 162.

With stalwarts Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma having stepped away from Test cricket, Rahul has taken on the responsibility of leading India’s batting line-up in this transition phase. His composed knock against a disciplined West Indies attack once again highlighted his maturity and control at the crease.

Former India wicketkeeper Parthiv Patel lauded Rahul’s innings, noting how he has embraced responsibility at a crucial stage for Indian cricket. “KL Rahul was outstanding today. He carried his England form into this match. Before that series, there were concerns about his batting, but he has stepped up when the team needed him most. Against a disciplined West Indies attack, he respected the bowlers early, settled himself, and once set, he rotated the strike beautifully. He looks much more in control now,” Patel said on Star Sports.

Rahul’s Dream Run in 2025

Rahul had already delivered his best-ever Test series against England, amassing 532 runs in 10 innings at an average of 53.20, including two centuries and two fifties. He followed it up with a match-winning century against Australia A, further boosting his confidence ahead of the West Indies series.

Parthiv Patel believes this year could eclipse Rahul’s most successful phase in 2017. “That hundred against Australia A gave him great confidence before this series. 2025 has already been an outstanding year for him — his second-best after 2017. Looking at the way he is batting, I’m confident he will surpass his old records,” Patel added.

With Rahul leading India’s batting unit during this period of change, his consistency and calmness could well define India’s Test fortunes in the years ahead.
