Home century drought ends! KL Rahul reveals new batting approach: 'Worked on my tempo'

KL Rahul Test Century – After nearly nine years of waiting, KL Rahul finally brought up his first Test hundred on home soil since 2016, scoring a patient yet elegant 100 against West Indies in the opening Test at Ahmedabad on Friday. This was only his second home century in a career spanning over a decade, but the 33-year-old opener admitted that a change in his batting approach has been the key to ending the drought.

Reflecting on his knock, Rahul explained that the biggest adjustment came in his mindset and tempo. “The only thing I’ve worked on in the last year or so has been maintaining my batting tempo. Just enjoying the phases that are not as exciting in my own head,” he said.

The opener emphasized how crucial singles and doubles are on Indian pitches, especially when facing multiple spinners. “At home, with three spinners playing and the field spread out, you need to collect runs with singles. Boundaries don’t come that easily. I had to make that mental switch — to enjoy grinding, to build my innings with ones and twos,” Rahul noted.

The century was not just about technique but also emotion. Rahul revealed that his celebration was dedicated to his daughter, making the moment even more special.

The stylish batter entered the Test on the back of strong form, including a hundred for India A against Australia, which he believes gave him rhythm and confidence. “Playing in different conditions helped. England was fun, scoring runs there gave me confidence. Coming here with some runs behind me and a break in between made me feel fresh. I really enjoyed being back,” he added.

With this milestone, Rahul now has 632 runs in six Tests in the ongoing 2025-27 World Test Championship cycle. While it is only his second Test century at home, the innings signals a turning point in his career — showcasing not just elegance but also adaptability. As India look to dominate their home season, Rahul’s newfound balance between flair and grit could prove invaluable.
