Harmanpreet Kaur Eyes History as India Kick Off Women’s World Cup Campaign in Guwahati
To lead a team in a home World Cup is a privilege few cricketers ever experience. For Harmanpreet Kaur, that honour becomes reality when India face Sri Lanka in the ICC Women’s World Cup opener on September 30 in Guwahati.
The 36-year-old skipper, who has twice endured the heartbreak of losing a World Cup final—first against Australia in 2005 and then England in 2017—is determined to script a new chapter this time.
“I’m sure this time we will cross the line,” Harmanpreet said at the Captains’ Day event on Friday. “We’ve been playing good cricket and are focused on enjoying the moment. We’ve learnt from past mistakes, and hopefully this time we’ll be on the other side.”
A major boost for India comes in the form of Smriti Mandhana’s stunning run of form. The world’s No.1-ranked ODI batter recently hammered 125, 117, and 58 against Australia, setting the tone ahead of the tournament.
“She’s been great, to be honest,” Harmanpreet said with a smile. “The way she’s batting nowadays, it’s exciting to watch—even from the other end. When I’m at the crease with her, things feel easier because she always takes responsibility. Having her is a huge strength for us.”
While optimism runs high, the captain acknowledges the challenge ahead. “Every team has an equal chance of winning, which shows how much the standard of women’s cricket has grown,” she noted.
The growing popularity of the women’s game is also something the Indian skipper takes pride in. “We now have packed stadiums, which is something we never saw before. It’s been an outstanding journey so far, and we’re looking forward not just to this World Cup but to many more years of progress.”
As the home crowd gears up to rally behind them, Harmanpreet and her team will be chasing history—to deliver India’s first-ever Women’s World Cup title on their own soil.
