Former domestic cricket stalwart Mithun Manhas has described his elevation as the new BCCI President as a “huge responsibility,” pledging to serve the game with passion and commitment.
Manhas, who represented Delhi for more than a decade after moving from his native Jammu & Kashmir, said his dual experience as a cricketer and administrator helped pave the way for his appointment.
“Maybe my work, my credentials,” said the stylish right-handed batter. “Over the last four years with the JKCA, we have qualified for the knockouts seven times. That experience will certainly help. It’s a huge responsibility, and I assure that I’ll be committed to giving my best with dedication and passion.”
The former India U-19 player ended his playing career as a player-coach for Jammu & Kashmir before transitioning into administration. He also served on the BCCI-appointed Committee of Administrators for JKCA. Under his watch, the association not only reached the Ranji Trophy quarterfinal last season but also saw the under-15, under-23, and senior women’s teams qualify for national knockouts.
At the BCCI Annual General Meeting, Manhas’ appointment continued the recent tradition of former cricketers taking up top administrative posts. He follows in the footsteps of Sourav Ganguly and Roger Binny, making him the third successive president with a prolific domestic background.
While Ganguly, currently the Cricket Association of Bengal president, skipped the AGM, former India spinner Harbhajan Singh was among the most prominent attendees, representing the Punjab Cricket Association. Harbhajan, who has played alongside Manhas since their junior days, hailed the decision.
“When a cricketer heads a cricket body, his experience and qualities help. It’s a good decision and a great tradition. I have played a lot of cricket with Mithun since the U-19 days and I am very happy for him,” Harbhajan said.
For Manhas, who featured in 157 First-Class matches, the new role represents an opportunity to give back to the game he has lived for. With his rich blend of on-field and off-field experience, Indian cricket will now look to him for leadership in shaping the sport’s future.
