Mohammad Yousuf Mohsin Naqvi backing has added another layer to the ongoing Asia Cup 2025 trophy controversy. The former Pakistan star came out in support of Mohsin Naqvi, who heads both the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) and the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), following India’s refusal to accept the trophy after their five-wicket win over Pakistan in the final.
During the presentation ceremony, the Indian team, led by Suryakumar Yadav, declined to receive the trophy from Naqvi. As a result, Naqvi left the event with the trophy while the Indian players continued celebrating on the field. The incident immediately drew criticism, with the BCCI even calling for Naqvi’s removal from his ACC position.
Yousuf defends Naqvi’s stance
Speaking to Pakistani channel Samaa TV, Yousuf strongly backed Naqvi, saying: “What Chairman Sir (Mohsin Naqvi) is doing is absolutely right. He has taken the correct stand. India should have taken the trophy at that moment. According to ACC and ICC rules, he was standing there as ACC chief, and the trophy should have been handed through his hands only.”
He added a sharp critique of the Indian team’s conduct: “You didn’t take it at that moment, so what’s the hurry now? You should have gone and collected it from his office if you remembered. At the ground, you were busy making your films. I said it that day too — they are not coming out of the filmy world. This is sports, this is cricket; movies won’t be playing here. In movies, there are retakes, but here you are playing a genuine sport.”
