Veteran Indian off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has finally broken his silence after going unsold in the ILT20 2025 auction, where he was listed in the highest base price bracket of $120,000.
The 39-year-old spin legend, speaking to Cricbuzz, made it clear that he had no regrets about his decision.
“That’s the price I wanted as a bare minimum, and I’m happy not to play at this stage of my career if my value isn’t met,” Ashwin said.
Ashwin also revealed that he was close to withdrawing from the ILT20 auction altogether because of his prior agreement with Sydney Thunder in the Big Bash League (BBL). However, he honoured his commitment by entering the ILT20 auction, despite not lowering his base price.
Sydney Thunder Commitment
The Indian great confirmed that he has signed up for the entire BBL 2025 season with Sydney Thunder, running from December 14 to January 25.
“I have signed up with Sydney Thunder for the whole season. Thunder were crystal clear about how they’d use me and brave enough to back it. My conversations with the leadership were excellent, and we’re fully aligned on my role. I love how Dave Warner plays the game, and it’s always better when your leader shares your mindset. I can’t wait to perform for the Thunder Nation,” Ashwin added.
His move makes him the first high-profile Indian male cricketer to feature in the Big Bash League.

What’s Next for Ashwin?
Apart from the BBL, Ashwin is reportedly keen to feature in the next season of The Hundred in England. Before that, he will also represent Team India in the Hong Kong Sixes tournament in November.
The multiple-format veteran, who retired from the IPL earlier this year, has made it clear that he wants to focus on quality opportunities rather than compromising on his value at auctions.
