Rajat Patidar is on the brink of creating a unique milestone in Indian domestic cricket — a rare hat-trick of titles as captain. After leading Royal Challengers Bengaluru to their maiden IPL 2025 title in June and guiding Central Zone to the Duleep Trophy crown earlier this month, the Indore batter now stands just one step away from another major triumph with the Rest of India squad in the Irani Cup.
Speaking ahead of the clash against Ranji champions Vidarbha at the VCA Stadium in Jamtha, Patidar emphasized staying focused in the present rather than dwelling on past glories.
“For me, what happened in the past is history. It’s important to stay in the present and give my best. That’s what I focus on,” he said.
Patidar, one of the senior-most members of the squad, also highlighted the significance of red-ball cricket.
“The importance of red-ball cricket should always remain the first priority. The Irani and Duleep Trophy give players a platform to break into the Test team. That’s why these tournaments matter so much. The next generation must value red-ball cricket highly.”
Facing Vidarbha, a team with strong red-ball credentials, won’t be easy. Patidar admitted it would be a stern test:
“Vidarbha have been an excellent team. I’ve played alongside some of their players recently, and I know the quality they bring. It’s going to be challenging but also very exciting.”
On whether home conditions will tilt the balance, Patidar remained unfazed.
“I don’t see it as an advantage or disadvantage. Our players have competed all across the country, on all kinds of pitches. That won’t matter much.”
With teammates like Ruturaj Gaikwad, Abhimanyu Easwaran, Ishan Kishan, and Akash Deep in the Rest of India squad, Patidar will be banking on his side’s depth and experience to continue his golden run as captain and lift yet another prestigious trophy.
