Australia ODIs a ‘Perform or Perish’ Test for Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli as BCCI Reconsiders 2027 World Cup Plans
The Australia ODIs are shaping up to be a ‘perform or perish’ moment for Indian cricket legends Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, as the BCCI is reportedly no longer viewing the duo as “safe bets” for the 2027 ODI World Cup.
According to a report by The Times of India, the three-match ODI series against Australia, starting October 19, could play a decisive role in determining the future of India’s two biggest names in white-ball cricket. The uncertainty follows months of speculation after both Rohit and Kohli announced their retirement from Test cricket earlier this year, leaving ODIs as their only international format.
BCCI’s Growing Concerns Over Longevity
Sources within the BCCI have expressed concern about Rohit Sharma’s ability to maintain form and fitness over the next two years, given that he now only plays one format. Chief selector Ajit Agarkar also hinted at this during a recent press conference, noting that he expects both senior batters to participate in the upcoming Vijay Hazare Trophy to remain in contention for future selections.
The report further stated that “informal discussions” about the 2027 World Cup began after India’s Test series in England, with Shubman Gill emerging as the centerpiece of a long-term strategy. “A blueprint was discussed with Gill and a pool of players was deliberated upon, as those in Indian cricket circles were convinced that Gill would captain India at the 2027 World Cup,” the report added.
Divided Opinions Within BCCI
While Rohit led India to a Champions Trophy title earlier this year, becoming the only Indian captain to win consecutive ICC trophies, not everyone in the BCCI is in favor of both senior stars featuring in the upcoming ODIs. Some decision-makers reportedly questioned the logic of continuing with two players aged 38 (Rohit) and 36 (Kohli), arguing that early bets on younger players would be a safer long-term option.

One senior official was quoted as saying, “If we keep dragging things, it will only get complicated. And with two players aged 38 and 36, you can’t place early bets on them. Even younger players can lose form and fitness, but they’re still the safer option.”
Agarkar Stays Tight-Lipped
When asked about the future of Rohit and Kohli in ODIs, Ajit Agarkar avoided direct answers, saying, “We’ve picked them for Australia. As far as the 2027 World Cup is concerned, I don’t think we need to talk about it today. The focus is on the present — they just need to score runs like they always have.”
As the Australia ODI series approaches, all eyes will be on the performances of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli — two icons who may well be fighting for their international future in Indian cricket’s evolving roadmap.
