Cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar believes the upcoming ICC Women’s ODI World Cup 2025 in India could transform the landscape of women’s cricket in the country. Reflecting on the team’s journey to the 2017 World Cup final, Tendulkar said Harmanpreet Kaur’s iconic 171-run knock against Australia was the moment women’s cricket in India moved to centre stage.
Writing in an ICC column, Tendulkar stressed that this World Cup is not just about chasing a trophy but about “igniting countless dreams” for young girls across India. He praised Smriti Mandhana’s graceful batting, calling it “silken” and reminiscent of the finest stroke-makers.
The batting legend also credited BCCI secretary Jay Shah for key reforms, including equal match fees and the launch of the Women’s Premier League (WPL), which have given the women’s game a strong foundation.
According to Tendulkar, a World Cup triumph on home soil would inspire a new generation, just as India’s 1983 men’s World Cup win inspired him:
“Now, the sport has the opportunity to transcend barriers—of gender, perception, and accessibility.”
With the tournament kicking off Tuesday, India has the chance to claim its first-ever global women’s title—a victory that could change the game forever.
