Shubman Gill is finally stepping out of the shadows of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli as India begins its home Test season with a fresh approach. After years of India relying on rank turners that often-produced one-sided matches, the new management under Gill seems set to change the narrative.
India’s dependence on turners, dating back to the 2021 home series against England, often meant easy victories for the hosts. But in the 2024 season, this strategy backfired as the Rohit Sharma-led side suffered a shocking 3-0 whitewash against New Zealand at home. Even seasoned batsmen struggled as pitches heavily favored spin.
Now, with both Rohit and Virat retired from Tests, Shubman Gill has taken over as captain, and India appears to be moving away from the “trial by spin” mindset.
Speaking to JioHotstar, Gill emphasized a more balanced approach to pitch preparation:
“We don’t want to win in 2–3 days. We know we have the best four spinners—Kuldeep, Jadeja, Axar and Washi. Any team coming to India faces two challenges: spin and reverse swing. We’ll test opposition in both areas, but our focus is on good cricket.”
Gill is leading India for the first time in a home Test as the hosts face the West Indies in the opening match of the two-Test series at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.

Learning from Past Mistakes
Gill reflected on India’s downfall against New Zealand, pointing out that the Kiwis were better prepared due to prior experience on similar pitches in Sri Lanka.
“It’s been a long time since we’ve been playing on turners. Other teams also know our strengths and weaknesses. On such wickets, if a spinner bowls at 90–95 kph consistently, any batsman will struggle. New Zealand had an advantage because they had played on turners before coming here. We hadn’t.”
Back-to-back defeats against New Zealand and Australia cost India a spot in the World Test Championship (WTC) final for the first time, with Australia and South Africa playing the summit clash instead.
Gill, however, is already setting his sights on the 2027 WTC final:
“We focus more on winning every series than the WTC. But yes, it would be disappointing if a strong team like ours doesn’t qualify.”
With Gill at the helm, India is clearly looking to combine spin, reverse swing, and strategic batting to make the home season competitive and exciting.
