Sri Lanka faces an uphill battle as they prepare to take on defending champions Australia in a crucial Women’s ODI World Cup league match on Saturday. Since 2022, these two sides have met only twice in T20 World Cups, both ending in heavy defeats for the hosts. With the pandemic and a lack of fixtures in the Championship cycle, Sri Lanka has little recent experience against the Australians to draw upon.

Australia enters the match with a perfect record in the 11 ODIs these teams have played against each other, and a convincing 89-run win over New Zealand in their opener has only reinforced their status as favourites. Meanwhile, Sri Lanka is still recovering from a 59-run loss to India in a rain-affected match and is keen to secure their first points of the tournament.

The Aussies’ in-form batting line-up may not require changes, but the R. Premadasa Stadium pitch could provide interesting opportunities. Pacers who troubled Pakistan and Bangladesh earlier in the tournament may inspire Australia’s bowlers, and a first innings on this surface could test how many runs it can produce.

Sri Lanka has spent significant time training at the venue, where five of their seven league games will be played. However, familiarity alone may not be enough. The team’s recent batting has been heavily reliant on captain Chamari Athapaththu, and the onus will be on other experienced bowlers like Inoka Ranaweera and Udeshika Prabodhani to step up. Young talents such as Vishmi Gunaratne and Harshita Samarawickrama will also have a chance to prove themselves against world-class opposition.

This clash will be a true test for Sri Lanka, as they attempt to break Australia’s dominance and make a mark on home soil in the ongoing World Cup.
