Suryakumar Yadav, India’s T20 captain, found himself in the eye of a media storm following India’s Asia Cup 2025 triumph, after his team refused to shake hands with Pakistan players and declined to accept the trophy from Pakistan Cricket Board chief Mohsin Naqvi. The incident sparked a heated debate over the intersection of cricket and politics.

The controversy began when India’s players consistently boycotted handshakes with Pakistan throughout the tournament, drawing criticism from Pakistani journalists who claimed it violated the spirit of the game. Tensions escalated after India refused to receive the Asia Cup trophy from Naqvi, known for his past anti-India remarks. Consequently, Naqvi left the venue with the trophy, leaving the Indian team celebrating with an “imaginary” one.
During the post-match press conference, a Pakistani journalist questioned Yadav:
“You played a great game and are champions today. But your behavior toward Pakistan was noted throughout — no handshakes, no photo session with the trophy. Do you think you are the first captain to bring politics into cricket?”
Yadav, unfazed, responded calmly despite attempts by the Indian media manager to intervene:
“Do I have to answer or not? Gussa ho rahe ho aap (You’re getting angry). I couldn’t even understand your question — you asked four questions at the same time.”
Demonstrating his patriotism, Yadav also announced he would donate his match fees to the Indian Army for all games played in the tournament, stating:
“I want to give my match fees from all the games which I have played in this tournament to the Indian Army.”
The episode underscored the growing tensions between the two cricketing nations, with the handshake boycott and trophy presentation controversy dominating post-tournament discussions. While India celebrated their victory on the field, the diplomatic flashpoints added an unexpected twist to their Asia Cup 2025 glory.
