In a historic and surprising move, 14-year-old cricket prodigy Vaibhav Suryavanshi has been appointed vice-captain of the Bihar Ranji Trophy team for the first two rounds of the 2025–26 season, marking one of the youngest leadership appointments in Indian domestic cricket history.

The Bihar Cricket Association (BCA) made the announcement ahead of the team’s Plate Group opener against Arunachal Pradesh in Patna on October 15, followed by a clash with Manipur in Nadiad on October 25. Veteran batter Sakibul Gani will lead the side, while Suryavanshi’s promotion signals Bihar’s faith in youth and emerging talent.

The decision comes amid administrative changes within the BCA, as the BCCI recently directed the association to expand its selection panel to a full five-member committee.

Vaibhav’s rise has been nothing short of remarkable. The teenager first made headlines after scoring a record-breaking century in the IPL earlier this year for Rajasthan Royals, becoming the youngest centurion in men’s T20 cricket with a 38-ball 101 against Gujarat Titans.

His recent exploits for India’s Under-19 team have only strengthened his reputation. During the Australia Youth Test series, he scored a brilliant 78-ball century in Brisbane and emerged as the top run-scorer with 133 runs across three innings as India sealed a 2-0 series win. Earlier, in the white-ball leg, he added 124 runs, including a 68-ball 70.

Vaibhav’s form in England earlier this year was equally impressive, smashing the fastest century in youth ODIs with a blistering 148 and finishing as the highest run-getter of the tour with 355 runs at a strike rate of 174.01.

Despite making his first-class debut at just 12 years old in January 2024, Vaibhav has played only five matches so far, with limited opportunities due to his Under-19 commitments. However, his leadership appointment indicates the high regard in which Bihar cricket holds him.

The young left-hander is also being closely monitored for India’s Under-19 World Cup squad, scheduled for early 2026, making him one of the most promising talents in Indian cricket today.
