Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli could still be part of the 2027 ICC ODI World Cup, says former West Indies fast bowler Ian Bishop, who shared his honest thoughts about the two Indian greats and India’s future under Shubman Gill’s captaincy.

Bishop believes that whether Rohit and Kohli make it to the next World Cup will depend on their motivation, fitness, and form over the next few years. “That’s their decision. I can’t answer that for Rohit or Virat or the BCCI. It depends on their determination and skill. They’ve been fine so far,” Bishop told PTI Videos.

Both players are ready to return to international cricket during the Australia tour, after being included in India’s ODI squad following their Champions Trophy win earlier this year. However, with Rohit turning 40 and Kohli 39 by 2027, their future participation is still a question fans continue to ask.

Talking about Shubman Gill’s leadership, Bishop said the young captain has the right mindset but needs time to develop. “He’ll be fine. Those two guys will help him along the way. He will grow in the job. He’s not the finished article yet, but people should give him time to learn as a captain and as a batsman,” he explained.

The former cricketer also pointed out the value of having experienced players like Rohit and Kohli to mentor Gill as he builds his leadership skills. “He has the temperament and talent to lead, but learning tactics and handling pressure takes time. I’m sure he’ll get help from the two veterans,” Bishop added.

Bishop also reflected on the recent India vs West Indies Test series, saying the West Indies team showed some improvement. He mentioned players like Shai Hope, John Campbell, Justin Greaves, and Jomel Warrican for their solid performances. “It’s not that they’ve arrived yet, but they’ve started putting some building blocks in place,” he said.

As India gears up for the upcoming ODI series in Australia, attention will be on how Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli perform and guide Shubman Gill in his early days as captain. Their vast experience and leadership could shape India’s next generation of cricketers — and maybe even keep their own 2027 World Cup dreams alive.
