Women’s ODI World Cup 2025 action heats up as England takes on South Africa in its opening match at the Barsapara Cricket Stadium on Friday. With a proud World Cup history—four titles, second only to Australia—England enters the tournament with both pedigree and pressure.

The Englishwomen last lifted the trophy in 2017 on home soil and reached the final in the previous edition, but this year, they are not seen as second favorites. That distinction has gone to India, who have steadily grown into a world-beating side. England, meanwhile, endured a tough year that included a whitewash in Australia.

However, Charlotte Edwards’ side has found momentum at just the right time. The team swept all four of its warm-up games, including wins against Australia, India, and New Zealand. Edwards, one of the most respected coaches in women’s cricket and twice a Women’s Premier League (WPL) title winner with Mumbai Indians, will look to translate that success into World Cup dominance.

England’s lineup is brimming with match-winners. Captain Nat Sciver-Brunt, fresh off a brilliant 120 in a warm-up match against India, will be central to the team’s campaign. Alongside her, experienced names like Heather Knight, Tammy Beaumont, Emma Lamb, Sophie Ecclestone, and Lauren Bell add balance and depth. Several English players also bring WPL experience, giving them valuable insight into Indian conditions.

South Africa, however, is no pushover. The Proteas have reached the semifinals in the last two ODI and T20I World Cups and come armed with firepower. Skipper Laura Wolvaardt, known for her elegant cover drives, and seasoned all-rounder Marizanne Kapp are the pillars of their lineup. They are backed by the likes of Tazmin Brits, Sune Luus, Chloe Tryon, and Ayabonga Khaka, making them a dangerous opponent.

With both teams eager to make a statement, the England vs South Africa clash promises to be one of the standout fixtures of the opening week. For Edwards’ England, it is not just about winning but proving they are still a force in world cricket. For South Africa, it is about breaking through to the next level and showing consistency on the biggest stage.
