Women’s ODI World Cup 2025 kicks off with a blockbuster clash as India face Sri Lanka at the Barsapara Cricket Stadium in Guwahati on Tuesday. The match brings together two of Asia’s fiercest leaders — Harmanpreet Kaur and Chamari Athapaththu — both known for their grit and determination.
For Kaur, the focus is on making a strong start. “Our main focus is on tomorrow’s game and setting the tone for us. Hopefully, we will keep playing our good cricket the way we have played in the past one and a half years, and not take any pressure,” she said on the eve of the opener.
India weigh conditions and team balance
India’s strength has traditionally been their spinners, but Guwahati’s humidity and expected dew could influence team selection. During practice, pacers Arundhati Reddy and Kranti Gaud simulated wet conditions by bowling with soaked balls, while Amanjot Kaur returned to full intensity, hinting at her fitness.
Skipper Kaur confirmed that all players are fit, though the absence of Renuka Singh Thakur from bowling practice suggested India may prefer a seam-bowling all-rounder. “Spinners have always delivered when trusted. But we’ll assess the pitch and conditions before finalizing the XI,” Kaur added.
Sri Lanka’s quiet confidence
Sri Lanka opted for a closed-door practice, focusing on fine-tuning strategies. Despite limited international cricket since their tri-series against India and South Africa earlier this year, their confidence comes from strong domestic performances and their Asia Cup 2024 triumph.

Athapaththu, who thrives in high-pressure games, believes her side can spring a surprise. “We don’t want to put too much pressure on ourselves. If we execute our plans at the right time, I know we can win this game. India are strong and experienced, but playing the first game at home brings pressure for them. We will look to use that,” she said.
Athapaththu’s record against India — 464 runs including a century and two fifties — adds weight to Sri Lanka’s challenge. Her familiarity with Indian players from the WPL and international cricket makes this rivalry even more intense. “They know my skill set and I know theirs. It’s a tight competition, and the team that handles pressure better will win,” she concluded.
With both teams determined to make a statement, the World Cup opener promises to be a thrilling contest between two Asian heavyweights.
