AHMEDABAD: When Yashasvi Jaiswal smashed a sensational 175 against West Indies in the second Test, it wasn’t just another milestone — it was a statement. The 23-year-old’s innings drew praise from legends like Brian Lara and Sunil Gavaskar, with the latter calling it another example of his growing collection of “daddy hundreds.”
Jaiswal’s numbers speak volumes — five 150+ scores before turning 24, a feat surpassed only by Don Bradman. His conversion rate of 50+ scores to centuries (39.6%) outshines the early-career records of Sachin Tendulkar, Ricky Ponting, Brian Lara, and even Virat Kohli. With seven Test centuries, he stands alongside Graeme Smith for the most by an opener before 24.
Behind the numbers, however, lies a tale of relentless hard work, discipline, and mental toughness — hallmarks of Mumbai’s famous “khadoos” cricketing culture.
“Mumbai’s tough cricket system built his resilience. None of us can imagine what he’s endured — living in a tent, struggling for opportunities. His biggest strength is his work ethic,” said Zubin Bharucha, Jaiswal’s mentor, in an interview with Times of India.
Bharucha revealed Jaiswal’s intense approach to practice — from perfecting the reverse sweep by repeating it 300 times a day to batting sessions that ran until 2 AM.
“It’s almost spiritual — the kind of focus and self-belief he carries. He once trained against a sidearm pacer bowling 150 km/h bouncers to prepare for Jofra Archer. Most players wouldn’t risk it, but Jaiswal wanted to master the challenge,” Bharucha added.
Sri Lanka’s batting coach Julian Wood drew parallels between Jaiswal and Abhishek Sharma, praising his clarity and ability to dismantle attacks.

“He has the discipline to finish games and manipulate fields like Abhishek Sharma. His clarity and ruthlessness make him special,” said Wood.
Former India players Pravin Amre and Wasim Jaffer also lauded Jaiswal’s maturity.
“His consistency is amazing. Being a left-hander adds balance to the Indian batting order,” said Amre.
“He could’ve gone on to score a triple century that day. When he’s under pressure, he finds ways to bounce back,” added Jaffer.
Jaiswal’s mentor also credited his curiosity and openness to learning.
“Even after big scores, he calls late at night to discuss technique or match preparation. He’s constantly analyzing and improving. When something feels off, he identifies it instantly,” Bharucha said.
Former Mumbai U-19 coach Satish Samant recalled spotting Jaiswal’s potential early on.
“I told selectors he wasn’t just ready for U-19 — he was ready for Ranji Trophy. His discipline was like Sachin Tendulkar’s even back then,” Samant shared.
Jaiswal’s journey — from struggling in Mumbai’s maidans to dominating Test cricket — is a testament to talent refined by obsession. With youth, hunger, and unmatched focus on his side, his story of “daddy hundreds” has only just begun.
